Turnover of
product
We focus on fast turnover for our sheep and cattle to maximise profitability for our clients. Our breeding programs ensure rapid growth and early maturity, allowing us to bring products to the market quickly. By using advanced genetics and innovative practices, we produce high-performing livestock that surpasses industry standards.

Early reproduction
in our animals
We prioritise early reproduction in our seedstock business to maximise productivity and profitability. Our breeding programs are designed to ensure that both our Poll Merino sheep and Wagyu cattle reach reproductive maturity quickly. By focusing on genetic selection and optimal breeding practices, we achieve high weaning percentages and optimal early growth patterns. This approach not only accelerates the breeding cycle but also enhances the overall performance and quality of our livestock, ensuring that our clients can benefit from increased yields and faster returns on their investments.

Reduced
labour costs
We are dedicated to reducing labour costs across our enterprise through efficient management practices for both our animals and people. By selecting traits that promote easy handling and low maintenance in our Poll Merino sheep and Wagyu cattle, we ensure that our livestock are manageable and productive with minimal labour input. Our focus on streamlined farming systems allows us to optimise productivity while minimising the need for extensive manual intervention. This approach not only lowers operational costs but also enhances the overall efficiency and sustainability of our operation.

The failures and
the successes
We believe in full transparency and won’t shy away from sharing both our successes and failures to help others make informed decisions. By openly discussing our experiences, we hope to provide valuable insights that other producers can add to their farming business’s toolbox. This approach is about continuous learning and improvement, so our clients can turn challenges into opportunities. Our commitment to knowledge sharing ensures that our community benefits from our experiences, driving better decision-making and growth in their own business.

The Power of Staying Curious with Nigel Kerin

Nigel Kerin returns to the Head Shepherd Podcast to discuss profit drivers, decision rules, staying curious and the importance of science and technology in farming. Nigel has a great way of thinking about the business of farming and no decision is made without analysing it first. Nigel uses a triangular model to help him make these hard decisions. “Down one side of the triangle, you've got business growth. Down the bottom, you've got cash flow. And up the other side of the triangle, you've got people, infrastructure, and I've now added technology into it.” Nigel runs each of his decisions through this model, “For me to go ahead and go down a particular path of doing something, [I ask] does it fit in with those three sides of that triangle?”.
